What to check, and what to ask

General guidance for homeowners, not specific to your system — worth knowing before you book anyone, including us.

  1. Cold air at the vents is not always a broken furnace

A thermostat fan set to ON instead of AUTO blows room-temperature air between heating cycles. It feels exactly like a failure and it is a setting.

  2. A clogged filter shuts furnaces down on purpose

Restricted airflow overheats the unit and a safety switch cuts it off. It is one of the most common reasons a furnace runs a few minutes and quits.

  3. Ask what fault code the board had stored

Modern furnaces log why they locked out. A technician who reads the code is working from evidence. One who does not is working from a guess.

  4. Ask to be shown a cracked heat exchanger, not told about it

A cracked heat exchanger is a legitimate reason to condemn a furnace, and it is also the most commonly overstated one. Ask to see it, or to see the camera image.

  5. The repair-or-replace line

A rough rule: when a single repair costs more than roughly a third to a half of a new furnace, replacing usually pencils out better. Past about fifteen years, weigh it harder.

Try these first

  1. 1. Set the thermostat, and change its batteries

HEAT, target several degrees above the room, fan on AUTO. Fresh batteries. A surprising share of no-heat calls end here.

  2. 2. Check the switch on the furnace, then the breaker

There is a wall switch beside the furnace that looks like a light switch. Turn it on. Then check the panel for a tripped breaker and reset it once.

  3. 3. Pull the filter and hold it to a light

If light does not pass through it, the furnace is starving for air and shutting itself off on a safety switch. Replace it with the same size printed on the frame.

  4. 4. Stand and listen through one attempt

Note what it does: nothing at all, a click and then silence, a start that quits after a few minutes, or a rumble on ignition. Say which one when you call.

  5. 5. Look at the exhaust pipes outside and the vents inside

Check that the two plastic pipes on the exterior wall are clear of snow and nests. Inside, check the registers are open and nothing is standing against a return.
